XAT exam patterns may change with each XAT exam. Candidates should always check the syllabus and the pattern before appearing for the XAT exam. Though Essay writing in XAT has been scrapped but in past during personal interviews (PI), candidates were given a contemporary or abstract topic. They were asked to write a coherent and logical essay of around 200 words with a time limit of 20-25 minutes. After that, the questions were asked based on the Essay.

Decision-making section is not included in any other MBA entrance test. The difficulty level of the questions in the XAT exam remains from moderate to difficult. Further, no XAT questions are repeated.

Exam Pattern

More than 75,000 aspirants appear for the XAT exam each year expediting their way to one of the best B-schools including the flagship XLRI Jamshedpur that conducts the examination.

XAT’s unique exam pattern and inclusion of General Knowledge topics make it one of the toughest MBA entrance exams. Due to this the score on the XAT exam remains quite low.

Why XAT paper pattern is unique?

XAT paper consists of four sections instead of three compared to other MBA entrance tests. Sections are:

  • Verbal and Logical Ability
  • Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation
  • Decision Making
  • General Knowledge
  • Essay Writing

The XAT exam paper is divided into two papers- Paper 1 and Paper 2.

Paper-1 should be completed within the time limit of 165 minutes and contain 75 questions whereas Paper-2 has 25 general knowledge questions that have a time limit of 25 minutes.

Hence, the total time duration for the XAT exam is 190 minutes.

XAT Marking Scheme:

  • +1 mark for each correct answer
  • -0.25 marks for each incorrect answer
  • -0.10 marks if more than 8 questions are unattempt
  • No negative marking in the GK section

The overall time duration for XAT Paper was increased from 3 hours to 3 hours 10 minutes.  The XAT exam has multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and one subjective question.

XAT- SECTIONAL BREAKUP

XAT Paper-1 includes Verbal and Logical Ability, Decision Making, Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation. There is no sectional time limit for this section.

XAT Paper-2 includes General Knowledge. Here the time is limited to 15 minutes for answering 25 questions. GK section does not have any negative marking.

Candidates with visual disabilities are given 25 minutes extra time to solve the first part of the exam.

XAT PREVIOUS YEAR’S PAPER PATTERN

Over 3-4 years, the XAT exam pattern has undergone several changes. Main change was the shift from Paper-based Tests to Computer Based Test.

Key changes in XAT exam pattern

  • Number of questions altered over the years.
  • Unattempted questions allowed reduced from 12 to 8
  • MCQ’s reintroduced in XAT 2020
  • Essay writing included for XAT 2022
